School Advisory Council

What is the School Council?

• The School Council is a leadership group of diverse parents/guardians, teachers and staff, community members, and the principal. They meet every month to work towards school improvement and have conversations with the school community.
• The involvement of diverse people on the council, especially parents and guardians, is key and CPS will provide translation services to make sure everyone can take part.

How can I get involved?
As an elected Family Representative

• You can nominate yourself or someone else to become an elected member of the school council. Nominations will be open from May 6th - May 19th.
• Community-wide voting will take place from May 20th - June 2nd.
• Only elected representatives can vote on issues.

As a Community Member

• Non-elected and non-voting members of the school community, including students, can attend meetings and are warmly encouraged to participate in all discussions and deliberations.

What is an elected representative?

• Elected representatives are public council members who actively engage in outreach to the school community and decision-making for the school. They are responsible for maintaining an open line of communication with their communities.

Should I become an elected representative?

• As a School Council member you will have an opportunity to positively impact your child(ren)’s learning, our school community, as well as ensuring greater caregiver engagement with school decision-making.
• Elected representatives attend one meeting per month and as many school events as possible.
• There are many supports available to elected representatives, a possible stipend, school-sponsored email addresses and translation services.

 In 2024/25, the School Council will help with:

• The transition to the new building, including how to launch the new space with families
• Communicating and reinforcing our revised cell phone policy at VLUS
• Collaborating on our School Improvement Budget by identifying key areas of need for the following school year(s)
• Developing key areas of family education
• Unpacking the revised math and ELA units for grades 6-8
